We have recently completed a high profile temporary fencing project for Colas rail based in Hampshire. We were instructed to erect temporary fencing along the 180M viaduct to protect the public below from potentially falling debris during their core renewal track.
The viaduct in question, was a listed structure which posed a number of obstacles before works took place. Orion worked closely with both Colas, Aecom and NR on the project to make sure everything on the project ran smoothly from inception through to delivery.
The viaduct walls had a coping stone on top of them with a handrail secured to it. Being a listed structure we could not fix permanently fix anything to it so we had to design a temporary structure that would suit. This structure not only had to prevent the fall of debris, it also had to be porous enough to let wind travel through it so that it did not topple over.
Once the design was approved NR – we sourced, purchased and produced the fencing. We were working in Colas’s core renewal weekend with heavy machinery on the track and tight time frames to work to. Not only did we have erect the fencing in a safe and swift manner while on site, we also had to have interval maintenance checks – day and night – on the fencing and viaduct to check the stability and structure integrity along with checking wind speed velocities throughout. This was done whilst we working with the onsite Colas team to ensure the smooth running of the project.
