Orion Rail teams up with Break Point to select and train veterans for a new career in the rail industry
Finding good quality employees is a recurring issue for many companies and Orion Rail are no different.
Orion Rail are a leader in the provision of a wide range of labour resource solutions to support the construction activity on the UK’s railways. Finding the right people, with correct knowledge and skill set is an ongoing challenge. There does however seem to be a great solution as evidence suggests ex-servicemen can offer an excellent ‘talent pool’ that can easily make the transition using the skills they already have.
Break Point Academy is run by Ollie Olllerton, the former UK Special Forces soldier better known as Ant Middleton’s colleague on the TV show ‘SAS Who Dares Wins.
Due to Ollie’s passion and expertise with ex-servicemen, Break Point Academy were appointed by Orion Rail to provide a pilot course for Orion’s first batch of veterans. The 3 week process begins an intensive 3-day course with Break point and is fully funded by Orion. We provide CITB (Construction Industry Training Board qualification) and PTS (Personal Track Safety) certification on successful completion. The first course held this month has been a resounding success and Orion and Break Point are looking to roll out more courses in the South of England during the coming months.
Sam from Orion Rail explains “There are several parallels, common skills and most importantly a certain ‘mindset’ that veterans automatically bring to the table when applying for a job in the rail industry. These traits can often set them apart from the everyday person and Orion Rail has long recognised a great fit and has benefitted from recruiting ex services personnel in the past”.
Sam continues “There’s a definite culture of safety instilled within veterans that they automatically bring with them to the rail industry. Working safely is of huge importance on the railways and underpins everything that happens during any rail construction process. In addition, a natural ‘team spirit’ is found within veterans as they tend to have a deep sense of responsibility, not just for themselves but also look out for the safety of their colleagues and the well being of the company. Combine these traits with the required level of personal fitness and a ‘can do’ attitude and you now have the recipe for what makes for an ideal ‘contractor’ on the railways”.
Jane Garrad, Marketing Director for Break point comments, “The Orion Rail selection and training program at Break Point really is a win, win, win for all concerned. Orion Rail get a great source of contractors, the new contractors embark on well-paid and rewarding careers, and Break Point gains a real sense of achievement that they are helping great servicemen to prepare for a new life and career. Everyone’s a winner!”
